Belmont Stakes Contender News & Notes: June 6, 2017

  • Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby champ Gormley, who finished ninth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, was officially added to the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes field after trainer John Shirreffs and co-owner Jerry Moss consulted with B. Wayne Hughes of Spendthrift Farm, which holds the breeding rights to the colt.
  • Irish War Cry will exercise at Maryland’s Fair Hill Training Center on the morning of June 7 and then be vanned to Belmont Park for the final leg of the Triple Crown.
  • Jockey Florent Geroux will have the mount on Dallas Stewart trainee Hollywood Handsome in the Belmont Stakes.
  • Japanese invader Epicharis visited the Belmont Park starting gate on June 5 for a schooling session after galloping on the training track.
  • Epicharis and Grade 1 Preakness Stakes show finisher Senior Investment are expected to have final workouts for the Belmont Stakes on June 6.
  • Multiple graded stakes winner Gunnevera, who is being freshened after bleeding during his fifth-place finish in the Preakness, will be aimed for a return in Saratoga’s Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes on July 29.
