Nyquist to remain at San Luis Rey Downs until Pennsylvania Derby

DEL MAR, Calif. – Nyquist, the Kentucky Derby winner and champion 2-year-old male of 2015, is likely to remain at the San Luis Rey Downs training center until running in the Grade 2, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx on Sept. 24, according to trainer Doug O’Neill.

Nyquist went to San Luis Rey Downs three weeks ago when O’Neill said he was going through a growth spurt. Nyquist used a swimming pool to stay fit and had his first work since the Haskell last Saturday.

He’s doing well there,” O’Neill said. “His weight is great. It’s a great facility.”

O’Neill said the plan is to work Nyquist the next three Saturdays at San Luis Rey Downs before he leaves for the Pennsylvania Derby.

Lord Nelson, the winner of the Grade 1 Bing Crosby on July 31, worked a half-mile in 47.80 seconds on Monday. He is pointing to the Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Oct. 8.
