 KENTUCKY DERBY 150: USRacing.com Derby Top 10

In the runup to the 150th Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 4, usracing.com continues with our weekly Derby Top 10 contenders.

Derby Top 10: Sierra Leone New No. 1; Locked Drops

Locked is no longer loaded.

After missing his 3-year-old debut race again, this time in the Fountain of Youth (G2), Locked is out as No. 1 in the latest usracing.com Derby Top 10.

Moving up to No. 1 is Sierra Leone, who at this point on the road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) has put in the best prep performance – a stretch drive in the slop for a half-length win over Track Phantom in the 1 1/8-mile Risen Star (G2) at the Fair Grounds on Feb. 17.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, a Kentucky bred son of Gun Runner, has won two of three starts, the loss coming by a nose to highly regarded Dornoch (No. 3) in the Remsen (G3) over a muddy Aqueduct track on Dec. 2.

Sierra Leone is trained by Chad Brown; Tyler Gaffalione was aboard for the Risen Star. Both are looking for their first Kentucky Derby win.

Locked, meanwhile, was scratched out of the Fountain of Youth (March 2) at Gulfstream Park. Trainer Todd Pletcher said he didn’t like the way the colt galloped in the hours before the race.

“We’ll regroup,’’ Pletcher said.

Dornoch has now won three in a row after two runner-up finishes for trainer Danny Gargan, with Luis Saez aboard for all the victories. With enough Derby qualifying points to make the field for the Run for the Roses on May 4, Gargan is leaving his options open for another prep – either the Florida Derby (G1) on March 30 or the Wood Memorial (G2) on April 6.

Another big winner on Saturday was Deterministic in the Gotham (G3) at the Big A. With just a maiden win in August in Saratoga on his resume, the Christophe Clement-trainee was a two-length winner over favorite Just a Touch,

Ten prep races with Derby qualifying points remain, beginning with Saturday’s $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3). No More Time, winner of the Sam F. Davis (G3), is among the top contenders, with a sliding scale of 50-25-15-10-5 points to the top five finishers.
