Gaining ground with every stride in the run for home, British Idiom wore down Donna Veloce and won the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) on Friday at Santa Anita.
A bargain $40,000 purchase, British Idiom raised her record to 3-0 for trainer Brad Cox, and gave Hall of Fame rider Javier Castellano his 11th Breeders’ Cup win.
Sent off at 5-2, British Idiom returned $7.40, $3.80 and $2.80, with 2-1 favorite Donna Veloce second and Bob Baffert-trained Bast third in the field of nine 2-year-old fillies.
Long shot Two Sixty set some fast early fractions, and was followed closely by Bast and Wicked Whisper. Around the turn, Donna Veloce swept past the leaders and took over in the stretch, but British Idiom finished strong to win.
Winning time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:47.07.
British Idiom is owned by Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables.
In earlier Breeders’ Cup races on Friday, Structor won the $1 million BC Juvenile Fillies Turf and Four Wheel Drive won the $1 million BC Juvenile Sprint.
